Workshop Descriptions

11a-12:20p Beginning/ Intermediate Staff

Come learn staff fundamentals in this introductory class. We will cover beats, planes, basic passing and transfers while learning exciting moves including the fountain and chopper. All levels welcome.

12:30-1:50pm Beginning/Intermediate Double Staff

This class is designed for beginners and will cover basic double staff technique while introducing planes, beats, timing and direction. All levels welcome.

3-4:20pm Intermediate/Advanced Double Staff

Learn how to create a variety of patterns and effects with two staffs by combining many different types of motion into your tricks. Beginning with an understanding of how we can move one staff, we quickly progress to two staff exercises designed to open the doors to "hybrid" and "stick on stick" techniques.

4:30-5:50pm Beginning/Intermediate Contact Staff

An introduction to contact staff manipulation with an emphasis on further learning. This class will take you through the basics of wrapping, rolling and spiraling with a staff. Hand, elbow, shoulder and neck wraps; halos and backside spirals. All levels welcome.

6-7:20pm Advanced Explorations in Contact Staff

Come learn the latest advances in contact staff! Take the contact staff technique you already know and apply them in resourceful new ways. This class will focus on the use of spirals, wraps and rolls to move the staff to the less explored parts of the body, even the legs.

Instructor Biographies:

Greg Maldonado

Greg has been playing with toys professionally for over nine years. His career as a performer has taken him from ballet to burlesque and back again in ten countries and placed him on stage with musicians, models and some of the world's finest jugglers. He is widely acknowledged as the world's premier instructor of contact juggling both in person, and through his DVD series "Contact Juggling" which are some of the most successful pieces of instructional juggling media in the world. The last four years have seen him bring his talents to bear in the world of fire with fantastic success. Through participation in the Bay Area group Spinagogue, of which he is a founding member, Greg has helped to redefine the standard for spinning instruction while bringing the art to a new audience. He currently resides in Oakland, California where he performs with the Vulcan Crew.

Jordan Campbell

Jordan's interest in the circus arts began at the age of 8 when he learned to juggle. Through his high school years and beyond he has grown as a juggler and expanded his repertoire to include acrobatics, partner balancing, contact juggling, magic (specializing in card magic), diabolo, and especially fire twirling (poi, staff, juggling, etc.). Poi quickly became Jordan's favorite prop and he loves teaching as much as spinning, if not more. Jordan spun with the Vassar College Barefoot Monkeys, then after graduating with a degree in Mathematics, moved to Oakland, CA to start the fire troupe A Different Spin. He now performs with Vulcan Crew. When he is not practicing his circus arts Jordan teaches math and designs RPG's.

Noel Yee

Noel, a member of fire performance troupe Vulcan Crew, has been involved in object manipulation for the past five years, focusing on poi, staff, contact staff, double staff, contact juggling and most recently hoop and meteor. He has trained and collaborated with many talented individuals and groups including performing in the Great Circle with the Fire Conclave at Burning Man for the past three years.

Noel is a founding member of the Spinagogue that hosts workshops in the Bay Area, and also teaches at the FireDrums gathering and throughout the US. In the summer, Noel can be found at Camp Winnarainbow instructing children of all ages in circus skills and performance techniques.

Keep your eyes out for his new instructional DVD Contact Staff!

Ian

Ian resides at the Vulcan and is deeply involved in the Spinagogue events. He is a founding member of Vulcan Crew and LumenAscent, performs with Fire Pixie Entertainment and Copper Lantern Fire Theater. He also he choreographs and performs for the band Think13, the performance group Lucid Dream Lounge and the modern dance company In Step Dance Theater. He has taught fire dance workshops both as President in training of the Temple of Poi in San Francisco, and at festivals and universities across the US and in Athens, Greece at the European Juggling Convention. His prop repertoire includes poi, staff, double staffs, double whips, fire eating/fire contact, rope, nunchakus, flow wand, contact juggling, and ball and club juggling and the slinky.
